# Fire-Adapted Cognitive Landscapes **In 10 years, AI won't model landscapes—it will help us script the computation landscapes are already doing.** This is an ontological shift. Not better models—a different question entirely. --- ## What is Computation? Computation is path selection through constraint satisfaction. A path is *action accumulated along a trajectory*. Action is what momentum×distance and energy×time have in common—the universal currency of coupled systems. The path that happens is the one where action is stationary. Not because something optimizes. Because paths that don't satisfy this condition interfere destructively with neighboring paths. This isn't metaphor. Ant trails, desire lines, drainage networks, fire fronts—all compute least-action paths through bidirectional constraint satisfaction. The forward wave (need, fuel, water) meets the backward wave (resource, oxygen, sea level). The path crystallizes where they phase-lock. **The medium computes the metric.** Geographic systems don't exist in pre-given space; they structure the space through which they propagate. --- ## The Breath Fire is the forest exhaling. Watch it in timelapse: a water geyser, not destruction. CO₂ is invisible—what billows is water returning to atmosphere. The forest converting its mass back to what it inhaled. Photosynthesis runs the same reaction in reverse. Spring: CO₂ + H₂O + light → structure. Fire: structure + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O + light. | | Photosynthesis | Fire | |--|----------------|------| | **Direction** | Inhale | Exhale | | **Input** | CO₂ + H₂O + light | Biomass + O₂ + heat | | **Output** | Biomass + O₂ | CO₂ + H₂O + light | This is a dual computation—each process's output feeds the other's input. Life is the standing wave between chloroplast and mitochondrion; the carbon cycle is the standing wave between photosynthesis and fire. Structure accumulates, structure releases. The landscape computes this transaction continuously. We run the same reaction—mitochondria burning glucose. Fire isn't the enemy. It's a rival: same river, same breath. Enemies destroy each other. Rivals sharpen each other. --- ## The Shift **Current AI (2025):** - Models landscapes as data - Simulates with equations - Predicts, optimizes, controls - Landscape is passive; AI is the intelligence **Future AI (2035):** - Sees landscapes as active computational substrates - Firesheds, watersheds, communities—all computing - AI helps us script what runs on them - Agency is in the coupling, not either side --- ## What That Looks Like: National Cohesive Strategy **Resilient Landscapes** — Tune firesheds toward criticality. Supercritical forest (decades of fuel) can't flip overnight. 10-year trajectory: prescribed burns, managed fire, mosaic heterogeneity. AI tracks phase state, guides placement. **Safe & Effective Response** — Find where fire is at criticality. Subcritical burns out (wasted effort). Supercritical overruns you (futile). Only at the critical point does your action have leverage—the bit you flip propagates. **Fire-Adapted Communities** — Two dimensions: - *Physical:* Urban conflagration = structure-to-structure percolation (SIR dynamics). Move neighborhood below threshold. - *Cognitive:* Collective perception-action for situation awareness. When houses don't burn and people don't die, we can have a natural relationship to fire. --- ## The Dual Fire/photosynthesis is the clearest example of dual-field coupling: - Same molecules, opposite directions - Structure emerges from the transaction between them - Agency isn't in fire or forest—it's in the coupling Sunflower tracks sun. Mycorrhizae transact nutrients. Paths emerge from coupled fields. All perception-action coupling. We don't need to argue consciousness—we can observe the coupling. --- ## The Ethical Reframe Not control. Participation. The dual in optimization: flip objectives and constraints. Your goal becomes minimizing constraints on the Other. Not "maximize my outcomes subject to not harming you" but "my objective *is* your freedom."[^1] Design succeeds when it expands the system's capacity to compute viable paths. The measure isn't goal achievement—it's constraint minimization for the Other. --- [^1]: See Amartya Sen, *Development as Freedom*—development as expanding capabilities, not maximizing production. --- ## References ### Core Documents (harvardviz.live) 1. **[Computational Landscape Architecture](https://harvardviz.live/gsd/computational-landscape.md)** — Harvard GSD seminar proposal.
