Cells divide only when they receive a proper growth signal at the surface. That signal travels down a relay called the RAS/MAPK pathway: KRAS → RAF → MEK → ERK, ending at the nucleus where the decision to divide is made.
When no signal arrives, the relay is quiet. Division is controlled. This is the normal state.
The pathway is a chain. Break any link and the message doesn't get through.
